Nintendo cuts 3DS price amid losses – Nerdvana

1329881049 86 Nintendo cuts 3DS price amid losses Nerdvana

Good news for people in the market for a portable video game system: Nintendo is slashing the price of its 3DS from $250 to $170, effective Aug. 12.

Bad news for Nintendo: The new lower price is because the company is posting losses and facing up to a lack of hit titles for both the 3DS, which is less than six months out from launch, and the Wii, which has a successor system on the way.

But leave it to Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime to spin it in a positive (if slightly pathetic) light:

“For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now. We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games.”

Meanwhile, Nintendo is rewarding 3DS early adopters with 20 free downloadable games. All they have to do is use a wireless broadband connection to log into the Nintendo eShop at least once before the end of the day Aug. 11 and join the “Nintendo 3DS Ambassador” program. Starting Sept. 1, they’ll be able to download 10 NES Virtual Console games at no charge (including Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda). Then, later in the year, they’ll be able to download 10 free Game Boy Advance Virtual Console titles (including Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame and Mario vs. Donkey Kong).

There are a lot of game out there just waiting for the right free games. Plenty of hours of scary fun to be had! It is like a window to another world. That didn't as though certainly, I speak with a slight accent. An exciting addition to this MMORPG is that you acquire wings allowing you to fly in certain areas and in battle adding a whole new dimension in PvP. Storm clouds will show up and you will begin to hear thunder. A technological breakthrough just may make your online games obsolete. Always keep your DirectX drivers up to date--outdated versions can cause problems with many aspects of your game including control and tracking. You can also copy movies, music and video's too.Its amazing how many different media optioins you can backup with this game copy software. Gamespot doesn't offer very good quality coverage from what I've seen of indie games, but they offer excellent coverage of big-name titles. I might want to disclaim any claims germane to miniclip although I don't know what it is specifically which makes it like that. Released in 2009 by a Finnish video game developer Rovio Mobile, it is not that hard to know why this game has reached an astounding success. I like the improvements made to the world of Sanctuary in this third edition of Diablo. What do you want out of game?

1329876261 67 Everything You Need to Know About Sony’s PlayStation Vita Launch

We’re just a few weeks out from Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Vita launch, so now’s a great time to review what it is, how it works, what it’ll cost, what’s under the hood and what you’ll probably need to buy a la carte. Ready, set…

What’s a ‘PS Vita’?

A device formerly known as NGP, or “Next Generation Portable.” Sony announced this successor to its PlayStation Portable dedicated gaming handheld on January 27, 2011 (it had been rumored for months) with that unsightly codename. Six months later at E3 2011, the company revealed the device’s much smoother name would be “PlayStation Vita” (the Latin word vita means “life”).

(MORE: PlayStation Vita Finally Arriving in U.S. February 2012)

What’s So Special About It, Design-Wise?

The Vita retains the PlayStation Portable’s hockey-rink-style shape, but it’s slightly wider and taller. That’s to accommodate the super-sized 5-inch, 960 x 544 pixel, OLED capacitive multi-touch screen capable of displaying up to 16.7 million colors. By comparison, the Nintendo 3DS’s top screen is 3.53 inches, the PSP’s screen is 3.8 inches and the Galaxy Nexus smartphone’s screen is 4.65 inches (the only smartphone I’m aware of with a 5-inch or greater screen today is Samsung’s unreleased-in-the-U.S. Galaxy Note). The spec to pay attention to here is OLED (organic light-emitting diode), which means the Vita doesn’t need a backlight, thus improving contrast ratios and allowing for the display to be housed in a thinner, lighter design (the Vita weighs just 260g — that’s 20g less than the original PSP).

While Sony’s eschewing 3DS-style features like stereoscopic 3D (I say wisely) or dual screens, their contribution to the “look, innovation!” pool is the Vita’s rear capacitive multi-touch pad, a back panel wallpapered in Sony’s trademark face button symbols that your fingers can “tap” while wrapped around the handheld. You can use the rear pad to “shoot” the ball in a Vita game like FIFA Soccer, for instance, or to “zoom” the sniper rifle in a game like Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Oh, and the unit includes Sony’s six-axis motion-sensing system (a three-axis gyroscope plus a three-axis accelerometer).

In the “standard features” department, the Vita includes both front and rear facing VGA (640 x 480) cameras, stereo speakers, a microphone, a d-pad and four PS-style face buttons, Sony’s classic PlayStation button, “start,” “select” and volume buttons, a rechargeable (non-removable) Lithium-ion battery and built-in Wi-Fi (3G + GPS optional). Slot-wise, you’ve got a place to stick in PS Vita game cards, one for memory cards (the Vita lacks inbuilt storage memory), a SIM card slot (3G, GPS), a headset jack, a multi-use port (mini-USB) and an accessory port.

The Vita also includes dual analog sticks, and by “sticks,” I mean actual raised control columns with convex-shaped grips (contrast with the flush nubs on the PSP and 3DS). While Nintendo plans to sell a cradle-style peripheral for the 3DS that adds a right-hand joystick, the Vita’s the only gaming handheld on the block with dual analog sticks built-in.

What’s Under the Hood?

The Vita employs an ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor and a PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU. To put that in context, Apple’s A5 processor (used in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S) is based on ARM’s Cortex-A9 core architecture, and you’ll also find the dual core version of PowerVR’s SGX543MP technology in those devices (the ’4′ in the Vita’s GPU indicates the quad-core version, and the ‘+’ refers to features designed specifically for Sony).

How powerful is it really? Sony’s made several comparisons to the PlayStation 3. They don’t mean spec-for-spec, of course, just that the Vita’s games are expected to look much like PS3 games, detail-wise.

What Colors Does It Come In?

Sony’s offering the Vita in one color only at launch: “Crystal Black.”

DiasFlec | Gaming Regrets: Throwing Out the Old | (2/21/2012)

For many of us, the current generation of consoles is just the latest in a long line of video game platforms that we’ve owned. In the near feature, our current systems will be replaced for the new kid on the block. 20 years from now we might look back with fond memories of all the great games we played (and wrote about). It’s been 20 years since I sold my first console to buy my next. I’ve had to give up a lot to keep up with the Joneses, but was it worth it?

Throughout January, Horrible Night will be featuring articles on Gaming Regrets.

What’s an Intendo?

Being a subscriber to Nintendo Power, I was a mark for all things Nintendo. When the company started publishing news about its “super” new console, I knew I had to make the upgrade. I was a late addition to the NES family and I wouldn’t let the possibility of an early adoption pass me by this time. I was 9 and needed to make some serious life decisions.

nwc1990 225x196 Gaming Regrets: Throwing Out the Old

If only I kept my NES.

Luckily enough my parents had decided to have a garage sale. I think it was the first and only garage sale we ever had. I knew in order to earn enough money to buy the Super Nintendo, I needed to put some of my more precious items up for sale, which included the NES and all my games. Now, I didn’t have the best lineup of games but at that point it didn’t matter. Parents were desperately trying to satiate their child’s want of this “Intendo” thing. I was happy to oblige.

In what would become a trend until I became older, I always had to sell one console to get another. I don’t know if I did that because there was no way I could afford the next hot console coming out or if I wasn’t allowed to have more than one. But other than the NES, I have purchased every console since then myself. Though I might have learned a valuable lesson, I wish it didn’t come down to selling my old console to get the new one.

What happened to my Super Nintendo?

Once again, the carrot on the end of the stick that is the next greatest console had me figuring out ways to pay for it. I’m pretty hazy on what I actually did with my Super Nintendo and games. I think I sold it to one of my dad’s coworkers so they could give it to their kids, but I’m not sure. I think at that point I was just done with the SNES and wanted Mario in 64 bits. I did hold onto one cartridge until I got to college. Of course, it was Secret of Mana, which I later sold to Craig “Pwrglove” Sturgis for like $15. I felt secure in the fact that I knew he would take care of the game and I’m pretty sure he still has it to this day.

I wish I could remember what I actually did with the Super Nintendo. Considering that the console is probably my favorite one of all time, I regret getting rid of it. But at the time you never know how hard nostalgia will pull at you as an adult. I think why a lot of my love continues to this day for the two old Nintendo consoles is because the games hold up pretty well for the most part. Those 2D sprite graphics hold up quite well. Especially when compared to the next two consoles I got rid of.

n64 470x368 Gaming Regrets: Throwing Out the Old

This…minus the Harvest Moon 64

2 Consoles at the Same Time

I bought the Nintendo 64 on the day it launched. I was so ensconced into the world of Nintendo that I was blind to any other video game opportunities out there. Sure, I played the Genesis at a friend’s house, but had no interest in the Sega Saturn. The first time I played a Sony PlayStation was quite memorable with Resident Evil, Destruction Derby, and Twisted Metal being the standouts, but I never thought I’d leave my comfortable Nintendo home…until I started hearing about Metal Gear Solid. That game changed my whole outlook on remaining brand loyal. Nothing on the 64 could compare to what that game offered. So, in a move that might come back to haunt him when he runs for political office, my friend who worked at the local KB Toys basically got me the system and Metal Gear for $100. For the first time in my life I had two consoles at the same time.

Though I would eventually sell both to be able to afford the very expensive PS2 (which I was again an early adopter, getting it the second month it was out), I don’t regret getting rid of those two consoles as much as the first two. The games, especially the ones on the PlayStation do not hold up nearly as well as those on the NES and SNES, even though I can still play them to this day. Would I recommend someone who had never played a certain game on the PlayStation go back and play it now? Absolutely not.

Of Regrets, I Have Manyfctwin 225x150 Gaming Regrets: Throwing Out the Old

I'm gonna get it anyway

The fact that it’s really easy to get most of the old games we grew up spending all night playing these days takes a little of the regret away. However, there is a local used game shop that has hundreds of old NES cartridges and I salivate every time I pass by. I wish I would have kept my old consoles and the games. I would have added to my collection over the years and could have the best of the best. Instead, I pine from a distance, and debate weekly whether or not I should go get that FC Twin that has NES and SNES slots. Even though the downloadable “virtual console” is a viable and space saving option, there is just something about having to blow into a cartridge to make it work much better than loading an emulation.

Although my wife might not be happy with the extra “clutter,” I’m not sure how often I would actually play the games. The debate between rational thought and nostalgia rages on.

1329757451 25 World of Warcraft Monopoly, Starcraft Risk inbound

Blizzard’s World of Warcraft and Starcraft franchises both have new in-game add-ons due out in the future, but the franchises are also growing off the screen. Today, Blizzard announced a new partnership with specialized board game maker USAopoly that will see Monopoly: World of Warcraft and Risk: StarCraft hit retailers beginning this May.

Monopoly: World of Warcraft replaces traditional properties with iconic WOW locations like Twilight Highlands, Grizzly Hills, and the Swamp of Sorrows, and it includes Alliance- and Horde-themed dice

As for the player pieces in Monopoly: World of Warcraft, Blizzard is leaving that decision to fans. Blizzard is currently holding a poll on its Facebook page where fans can vote to decide which items will make it into the game as player pieces.

The options are Chen’s Keg, Corehound Pup, Crafting Anvil, Doomhammer, Flight Path Boot, Hearthstone, Mechagnome, Murky, Spellbook, and Treasure Chest. Monopoly: World of Warcraft is due out this May for $40.

As for Risk: Starcraft, the board game has players choose from terran, protoss, or zerg factions and six heroes before taking on other players in the famous strategy game. The game boasts three modes, over 290 pieces, and launches this summer for $50.

World of Warcraft and Starcraft are not the first gaming properties to be adapted into specialized board games. The Metal Gear Solid and Halo franchises have also been spun into Risk board games, and a Nintendo version of Monopoly is also available.

As for World of Warcraft and Starcraft, Blizzard is currently developing expansions for both games in the form of Mists of Pandaria and Heart of the Swarm, respectively. However, Activision revealed last week that it does not expect both to launch before the end of the year.

DiasFlec | iCade 8-Bitty for iPhone and iPad pays homage to a Nintendo classic | (2/20/2012)

1329696260 82 iCade 8 Bitty for iPhone and iPad pays homage to a Nintendo classic

Let’s make no bones. With the announcement of its iCade 8-Bitty gamepad for iPhone, iPad and Android, ThinkGeek is not merely evoking the 8-bit era with an 80s-styled peripheral. It is specifically emulating the controller of the original Nintendo Entertainment System and in doing so, recreating (or trying to, at least) a classic piece of controller design. It would have been fascinating to be a fly on the wall in the conference room at ThinkGeek HQ when a name for the product – it’s hard to imagine that the name iCade Nessy was not discussed.

It’s a much simpler task to identify the differences between the 8-Bitty and a NES controller than it is to list their similarities. There are two shoulder buttons and an additional two face buttons (for a total of four) not present on the NES controller – necessary additions given the sophistication of contemporary games. And the controller is more colorful than Nintendo’s gray, red and black original, with a front face of primary colors, and edged in a wood-styled veneer. In terms of outward appearance, that’s really about it.

A close inspection of the product photography betrays the incredible attention to detail and respect shown to the original NES control pad. The 8-Bitty recreates its inspiration down to an insane level of detail. There are the small, rounded oblong rubber buttons recessed into the face in the precise location of the NES controller’s start and select buttons. There are the chubby arrows on each of the D-pad’s four directional buttons. There’s even the tiny cuboid of missing plastic on the controller’s upper edge in line with the cable of the original controller.

Hopefully the 8-Bitty will feel as authentic as it looks. Correctly weighted buttons and pad are a must, though I won’t be fully satisfied unless the D-pad squeaks and crunches under duress the way my NES pad did during more frantic games of Nintendo Tennis.

Functionally, this is very different gear, of course. The 8-Bitty is a wireless controller for iPhone, iPad and Android devices, powered by two AAA batteries (sold disunitedly). As one would hope the device is compatible with the iCade-compatible games library including Atari Greatest Hits.

No release date has been announced (though Ars Technica is reporting it will see daylight this year), but the price of US$24.99 makes the 8-Bitty a tempting prospect compared to the $99.99 iCade – and might perhaps be more evocative of retro gaming to children of the late 80s who cut their teeth on colorful platformers in their bedrooms rather than on shmups in smoky amusement arcades.

DiasFlec | Next generation consoles not a necessity | (2/19/2012)

1329620654 70 Next generation consoles not a necessity

Rumor has it Microsoft is going to unveil the next version of the Xbox at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Exposition, along with speculation that the Playstation 4 might be in production and revealed to the public soon. But this isn’t necessarily a good thing at this point. Is the general public ready for such advancements, and will gaming really benefit from such choices?

Upon looking at some of the widely considered greatest games of all time, one will find that these lists are often composed of games that were for the Super Nintendo or original Playstation consoles. And while current generation consoles have had their gems featured on such lists, it isn’t with the same frequency. This is taken into consideration with the fact that many of the games on these lists revolutionized an aspect or genre of gaming and influenced development up into today, which is why their importance is noted.

But when one looks back on these games, there are obvious differences with today’s games, namely graphics, frame rate, gameplay, etc. Newer games are held to such a high standard, that companies are consistently pushed to feature photo-realistic graphics and process more information than ever before. This is ironic, since some purists will often claim that the greatest games were made years ago. But these standards are complicating matters for both the developers and the gaming audience.

When it comes to current generation consoles, there really isn’t a need for yet another iteration. The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are more than sufficient enough hardware for gaming, and creating yet another generation will only complicate matters further.

First, the developers will be hit hard, or have already been hit hard if games are currently in production for this rumored system. When the Playstation 3 debuted, the launch titles were absolutely horrible with the exception of Resistance. Developers either rushed a product, or didn’t have a grip on the new hardware. The shift from Playstation 2 to Playstation 3 was a living nightmare for some companies, who simply couldn’t handle the new hardware, and their product consequently suffered.

The only reason new consoles would be manufactured would be because they would further evolve gaming, with even better graphics and so on. The problem is that audiences don’t need more at this point. Graphics are already unbelievable, game play can be over the top and explosive and current games already offer enough.

Secondly, there is an issue with pricing. Shelling out $60 on a new game is already really tough for some people and companies have overcompensated loss of profit by making peripherals to appeal to the casual gamer. Consistently spending more money into newer systems means the consumer will have to do the same. The new handheld Sony device, the Playstation Vita will feature games for $50, which doesn’t even include backwards compatibility with old Playstation Portable games. These games are almost the cost of a current generation console game and will have noticeably lower quality. It isn’t likely that many people are going to spend $50 for a handheld game. By creating a new console, there will most likely be a guarantee of a higher price for games, possibly to $70.

If developers can’t even make games right now that are considered the best of all time, then the creation of a new console isn’t going to solve that problem. The issue doesn’t lie with the graphics, gameplay or other aspects of a game. The issue lies with how developers are sometimes held to unbelievable standards, and that games are more difficult to make today than ever before. Making a new console won’t solve a problem of losing profit, especially if prices are consistently raised.

There’s a possibility that new consoles will only add to the experience at this point with some new add-on. The Wii-U, which has already been unveiled, is Nintendo’s new console, that’s supposed to be released sometime this year. The difference with the Wii is that the Wii-U has a controller with a built-in screen that provides another gaming screen. It also is a much more powerful console and is rumored to be even more powerful than the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. If this means that Nintendo is actually going to release quality games, then it’s by all means an improvement. The Wii, while it had its standout games, was a failure for the hardcore gamer. Unfortunately, consumers are subject yet again to another stupid name for a console. Whatever happened to “Nintendo Revolution?” People are probably more apt to play a console that with a name like Revolution, and not as much for “Wii.”

This is fine for Nintendo, especially since it seems like it is trying to rebound from the Wii, but the same doesn’t apply to the others. Both the Playstation 3 and the Xbox have great quality games, and there are many more on the way.

It doesn’t seem like there’s much more that can be added to what consumers already have, unless companies are seriously striving towards the futuristic gaming style seen most often in science fiction movies.

The news that Nintendo is predicting a rare loss in revenue didn’t escape NMA TV, the Taiwanese animation team that has a knack for crafting absurd, animated reports on the world’s headline stories.

This time around, Mario gets the brunt of NMA’s bizarre spin on the news, falling victim to a toppling Gameboy and crying a steady stream of tears as the news team’s “anchors” describe Nintendo’s recent announcement that a loss of 65 billion yen (around $839 million) is expected for the fiscal year. The video also features a scene of businessmen carrying Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 mercilessly beating an avatar of Nintendo after deflecting the turtle shells he launched at them.

Oh, and we also get to see Mario using a vacuum to suck money out of a bunch of old people while they play the Nintendo Wii, and a Nintendo 3DS user vomiting into a garbage can after the game’s 3D graphics made him ill.

As the report notes, however, things could turn around for Nintendo with the upcoming release of the Wii U, the company’s next-generation console.

Here’s the video in all of its amazingly weird glory:

Final Fantasy creator speaks up

Last night Nintendo Life editor James Newton attended a presentation by Final Fantasy creator and The Last Story director Hironobu Sakaguchi at London’s BAFTA HQ. The famous developer reflected on his 25+ years of industry experience and his latest project, answering questions from the packed-out audience.

The night opened with an on-stage demonstration of The Last Story as Sakaguchi explained his desire to create a single detailed city — Lazulis — filled with little touches: the main character can bump his head on a sign post, for instance. Sakaguchi described this as a desire for "density of minute details" that help to build up a believable game world.

Leaving the city to take on one of the game’s real-time boss battles, Sakaguchi explained that The Last Story came from a desire to create a new kind of battle system, and that he and the team went through a year of experimenting with various fighting styles before landing on the one included in the game. His ultimate goal, he said, was "to create a new style of RPG" by implementing a new system called Gathering.

During the real-time battles, your AI team mates mostly do their own thing — though you can give them specific pointers — but as the main character you can use Gathering to draw the attention of any enemies. In one boss battle we saw this was used to distract a giant from attacking your squad mates to allow them to attack, before leading the monster onto a crumbling bridge and down to its doom. Sakaguchi believes the real-time battles and Gathering system are tightly interwoven, allowing the player to "bring order to chaos or break up organised enemy groups with unpredictable attacks". The idea for the intriguing system came to Sakaguchi while waiting to catch a wave when surfing, and while at first the system meant players would get beaten over and over, trial and error put it right.

After the demonstration Sakaguchi opened up the floor to questions from the audience, telling tales of his early failures and his next production, a surfing game on iOS, apparently. When asked about the semantic parallels between Final Fantasy and The Last Story’s titles, Sakaguchi replied:

My daughter said to me: "Lost Odyssey, Final Fantasy, The Last Story — why do all your games have the same name?", so my next game will definitely be called something different.

Sakaguchi also spoke on his long-standing creative collaboration with composer Nobuo Uematsu:

I give Mr Uematsu the story outline and he returns with two or three pieces of music. The only time I have rejected his music is for the first Final Fantasy and for The Last Story; as the game system changed, so I felt the music had to be different too.

After I rejected him I didn’t hear from him for a month, and I thought it could be the end of our 25-year marriage, but he returned with music that perfectly fit the game world. His music is so influential and inspiring that I sometimes edit the game around music itself if it gives me an idea for a character or system.

Upon leaving the stage Sakaguchi spent time meeting fans — some of whom had travelled from all over Europe — signing autographs and posing for photos. If you missed him at BAFTA, he’s attending the MCM Midlands Comic Con in Telford tomorrow.

Thanks to Nintendo, BAFTA and Mr Sakaguchi for the event.
