1329905074 68 Reader Review: Soul Calibur V

Itching to play a new fighting game? Kotaku reader Tristan Damen has taken Soul Calibur V for a spin. Does a fifth iteration do the game some good? Or should the developers have left it at number IV?

Soul Calibur V

It was a bright Saturday afternoon when I’d first realised that I didn’t like the direction that the Soul Calibur series had taken. I’d just finished an hour long session against a skilled opponent who’d bested me five times straight with Edge Master’s feminine duplicate, Elysium. Cycling through a series of move sets – both old and new- and coupled with a near-unblockable Critical Edge attack, I had found my match for the day. I persisted, however: another five fights until a breakthrough – and not to mention, painfully-close – fifth round win. In spite of this achievement, I felt nothing but apathy for a series that I’d loved since my final years of High School.

What was to blame? Was it just that my skills had failed to evolve across six iterations (remember Soul Edge/Soul Blade kids)? Had I come to rely too much on new features aimed at newcomers? Was it the lack of compelling single player content?

It was a combination of all of the above, plus a few other minor annoyances that I had encountered throughout my twenty-something hours with Project Soul’s latest weapon-based fighter. The overriding feeling I got was that what was added wasn’t substantial enough to mask the features that were watered-down or taken away.

A fighting game with a story?

As with Tekken 6, the first thing that your gaze will be thrust toward is the new Story mode. Set in 1607 A.D (seventeen years since the last instalment), players will control a handful of characters in a (roughly) four hour quest to destroy the cursed sword Soul Edge. You’ll spend most of your time with protagonist, Patroklos (and his Alpha variant), but you’ll also get some time with his whiny sister and the mysterious Z.W.E.I. Fights are tied together with hand-drawn stills overdubbed with melodramatic voice acting. All comments about the predictable, woefully-told story aside, it’s odd that the developers opted to use a central character that is so difficult to use (this observation is true for his variant as well). Patroklos’ attacks don’t seem to flow like that of series veterans like Cervantes or Mitsurugi, so the later chapters are actually quite difficult

Apart from the aforementioned Story mode, there’s very little else to keep solo players engaged for a sustained period of time. To their credit, Project Soul has implemented some practical elements to the genre staple Training mode; with the ability to enable prompts that offer advice as to when you should use specific attacks as well as the more common move lists. Quick Battle is very similar to Ghost Battle from the more recent Tekken games, with the exception that you can earn titles for the new License system (more on that later). Arcade mode follows the standard time attack formula and has no hints of story for those intrigued by the rest of the game’s cast. Finally, there’s Legendary Souls mode which will be a welcome addition for the more skilled players amongst you, as it sets the CPU difficulty to near unbeatable levels (read: be prepared to face off against perpetual combo machines). After about eight hours, you’ll have seen all that Soul Calibur V can offer you without engaging in online competition.

The game-changer

It may not be apparent at first, but new mechanics inspired by (or derived from) Capcom’s recent revival of the fighting game genre have significant implications for the Soul Calibur formula as we know it. First, there are Critical Edge moves that act as your Ultra Combos (for those experienced with Street Fighter IV and its subsequent releases). Performing a double quarter circle motion in concert with pressing all three attack buttons will trigger a flashy, multi-hit attack that can either turn the tide of a match, or at least help you keep up depending on your choice of character. While all of these moves are expertly animated and awesome to behold, some of them are grossly overpowered. Characters like Yoshimitsu, Elysium and Siegfried can take – in some scenarios – more than fifty percent of their opponent’s life with a carefully timed Critical Edge manoeuvre; turning what could have been a close contest into a series of one-sided affairs. I liked the concept initially: a last minute gambit that could help newcomers (or those like me with lesser skills) to get back into the match, but it’s been poorly implemented across the board with some being neutered by range or lacking comparable power.

Project Soul has also lifted the License system from Marvel Vs Capcom 3 and have implemented it with similar aplomb. You can customise your license with titles that you’ve unlocked in Quick Battle and icons (pictures of the cast and your custom characters). Your license will also track your stats across single player and online activities and you can compare your accomplishments with any players that you encounter. The developers have also managed to put their own spin on this with the Rival system which allows players to compare vital stats (time played offline/online, best Arcade time, win/loss ratios and more) with up to three registered players. It’s a great idea and it managed to ignite my competitive side for a few speedy playthroughs of Arcade at the very least. Soul Calibur V benefits from the blend of old and new book-keeping techniques.

Horses in pink g-strings?

The character creator returns in Soul Calibur V, with the ability to customise the look of your favourite fighters or deliver your own spawn to the dueling grounds. Gone from this instalment is the quasi RPG weapon and ability selection, this time it’s all about looks. I’ve fought everything from provocatively-dressed lingerie models to pixel perfect likenesses of comic book heroes. I’ve also been tasked with defending myself against some more abhorrent creations, like a horse dressed in a pink g-string, sporting a conical dongle and bright white, spherical testicles. This is what you get when the default placement area for waist accessories is directly over a character’s crotch. In any case, Soul Calibur V’s creation suite showcases the most creative and deviant elements of a fledgling fighting community.

In terms of presentation, Soul Calibur V features what are easily the most technically-impressive visuals in a fighter on this generation of hardware. Minor clipping issues through clothing aside, the game is achingly beautiful; even when showing duels between the most loathsome of cast members. It must be said that in this iteration more than any other, Project Soul has the camera squarely pointed up the skirts of the feminine cast members and this can be off-putting; particularly when you manage to break some of these characters’ armour.

Despite the spirit of negativity that permeates throughout this review, you should know that the 8-Way Run system and weapon-based combat still holds up well after all these years. The new additions may cheapen some contentious battles, but Soul Calibur V is still a competent fighting game. It’s just that the game has drifted so far from its point of difference that I yearn for the days of the Dreamcast original. The visuals are just as striking as any of its predecessors, the soundtrack rousing, the cast varied, but Project Soul hastaken too much from the competition and omitted features and characters that endeared the series to me all those years ago. A great game, though merely a solid entry in an otherwise distinguished series.

The Roster

There are quite a few new faces to the Soul Calibur series: front and centre being Patroklos and Pyrrha, series veteran Sophitia’s children. Pyrrha handles similarly to her mother and her Omega variant’s move set is nothing short of deadly.

Viola is an interesting addition, being able to place her weapon behind you to juggle and otherwise continue combos.

Z.W.E.I is similar to Patroklos in that he’s pretty hard to read, and even harder to use.

Natsu, Leixia and Xiba are ring-ins for Taki, Xianghua and Kilik respectively, and handle somewhat like their predecessors. There are also several returning characters with minor tweaks; but some have stood to benefit more from the passage of time than others.

Ezio Auditore, of Assassin’s Creed fame, also makes an appearance, and he’s a perfect fit for the series. Dampierre, the bumbling thief from the PSP instalment, Broken Destiny is present as EBGames-exclusive DLC. It’s a shame that this lively character is held to retail ransom, but I’m glad that he made it all the same. Puzzlingly, there’s now three Edge Masters (read: characters that switch move set in every round) available in this instalment: Edge Master himself, Kilik and Elysium. Edge Master and Kilik inherit everything – including Critical Edge maneuvers – from the characters that they imitate.

It may sound like sour grapes, but there’s a distinct lack of balance in this roster and it’s also missing some characters that have endeared themselves to the series faithful (Zelasamel and Talim are the most notable omissions). This is made worse when you consider that three characters perform what is essentially the same function.

1329894259 91 Five PS Vita Accessories to Consider

For those that didn’t snatch a pricey $350 special edition PS Vita last Wednesday, cheaper versions of Sony’s powerful gaming portable will launch in the U.S. tomorrow (technically midnight tonight) along with the final launch games and accessories.

Whether you’re in the market for one or just a dyed-in-the-wool Nintendo-head, you have to hand it to Sony — the handheld is mighty impressive under the hood, and beating the odds, the launch games lineup actually packs more hits than misses.

(MORE: Sony PlayStation Vita Review: Beautiful, Expensive and Worth It)

Assuming you’re planning to snag the $250 Wi-Fi or $300 Wi-Fi + 3G version of the handheld, here’s a quick list of optional accessories (some less optional than others) to consider.

A protective case. The Vita sells without a slipcover, and with its protruding thumbsticks and jumbo 5-inch screen, there’s a lot to safeguard. Your options here are mixed. The official $20 Sony “carrying case” certainly does the job with its stiff front/rear protective panels, but it uses a pair of mandatory snap-in, snap-out clips to secure the handheld. The idea’s that you’re able to leave the Vita in the case while playing, or even use it as a stand (fold it into a triangle and it props the Vita on a flat surface, inclined backward 20 or 30 degrees). But playing while the case is attached means it ends up dangling from the Vita’s bottom, and using it on a table as a stand prevents your fingers from connecting with the rear touchpad. If you just want a secure, durable case, it works well enough, but then why not just go with a less expensive, easier to slide in or out of, slipcase? Sony makes one of those, too: The $20 PS Vita “travel pouch” is a soft case which uses a neoprene liner and includes storage spots for four game cards and two mesh pockets for extras, like a pair of headphones (the “carrying case” offers extra storage for nothing). Note: There’s also an official Vita “starter kit” that includes a soft sleeve case, a 4GB memory card and card case, a piece of protective film, headphones and a cleaning cloth for $40.

A screen-protector. They’re ridiculously overpriced for what you get — a tiny piece of limpid plastic with the heaviness of an overhead projector transparency and sticky on one side — but they pay dividends if you’re worried about scratching the Vita’s glass screen. The ones I bought came with a multi-layer application mechanism that was sadly too clever for me. After futzing with it for 10 minutes and failing miserably, I gave up, made sure the Vita’s screen was clean, carefully peeled everything off the protective panel, and gently dropped it into place, just like the ones I’ve used on my smartphone (mission accomplished). Expect to pay between $5 and $10, depending what you buy and how many pieces are included.

A good pair of headphones. The Vita’s built-in stereo speakers sound fine, but they’re still handheld speakers. It only takes a moderate amount of ambient noise to drown out background music or make it hard to hear what a character’s saying in-game, so a pair of decent noise-blocking headphones is a must, especially if you plan to play on the go, where your ambient noise environment’s a crapshoot. Shameless pitch: I use a pair of AKG K240 studio headphones. They run about $100 and have incredibly low bias when it comes to hearing sounds as intended. The downside: They’re bulky (over-the-ear-sized) with a longish cable. If you have something that works, great. If not, set aside anywhere from $20 to $100, e.g. Sony sells a pair of Vita-branded in-ear headphones with an integrated mic for $20.

A memory card. Here’s the part where you’re either a cheerleader for Sony’s cause, or grumping about the company exploiting consumers by selling the Vita without built-in storage and offering proprietary, high-priced memory cards. Enough’s been said about the markup already, just know that you’ll pay $20-$25 for 4GB, $30-$35 for 8GB, $60 for 16GB and $100 for 32GB (the $5 markup on the first two is courtesy GameStop, if you’re wondering). What’ll you need? I have all of the launch games here, and most only require 4MB (though Uncharted: Golden Abyss wants 64MB and FIFA Soccer needs 160MB). If you’re sticking with retail games, 4GB gets the job done. But if you want to actually download anything from the PS Store — older PSP games, full Vita ones which cost $5 less than their retail versions — even 16GB’s going to cramp your style. The downloadable version of Uncharted: Golden Abyss clocks in at over 3GB, meaning you’d barely fit five similar-sized games on a 16GB card. You can backup saves (and games) to your computer or PS3, and kudos to Sony for supporting this, but isn’t the Vita supposed to be self-sufficient instead of reliant on ancillary devices?

A handlebar/trigger grip. Full disclosure: I haven’t tested one yet, but I can’t wait to, because it’s really all the system’s missing (okay, the joysticks could be a tick bigger). Without the handlebars you’re accustomed to on console-style gamepads, your fingers curve around empty air, essentially pressing up against the Vita’s sides in a way that limits their mobility. Handlebar grips let you better stabilize the unit (with fewer fingers). A company called PDP offers a pair of Vita grips (with triggers) for $18, basically a snap-on piece that makes the Vita look a little more like a PS3 DualShock controller.

What else? There’s a car adapter for $18, probably a must if you plan to play on long trips (there’s no airplane adapter yet, though you could pick up an auto adapter-to-airplane converter). Sony’s selling a Vita charge cradle for $20 if you want a dedicated drop-zone. There’s a standalone Vita USB cable for $15, though the system comes with one, so I’m guessing it’s just meant as a replacement (note the Vita doesn’t charge off a USB-computer connection). And last up, MadCatz is selling a “PS VITA Armorshell” wraparound for $13, which is cheap, granted, but it doesn’t protect the screen or rear touchpad, and I worry about wraparounds because if abrasive particles (say bits of sand) get trapped between the outer shell and unit itself, the chances of scratching can actually increase.

1329840249 29 PS Store Update Brings PS Vita Games and More

This week’s PS Store update might be focused on the PS Vita, but there’s something in it for PS3 owners as well. They can enjoy the Mass Effect 3 demo which is now available for download at no cost. Moreover, PS Plus subscribers can treat themselves to free downloads of Far Cry 2 (available only for this week) and other new PSN games, while availing discounts on The House of the Dead III, Worm Ultimate Mayhem and the Grand Theft Auto IV.

Let us start with the numerous PS Vita offerings that are lined up for all those who have got their hands on the First Edition bundles. While Super Stardust Delta is the only Vita title to be priced at 9.99 USD (approx. Rs. 495), others like Escape Plan and Super Stardust Delta Interstellar Bundle go for 14.99 USD (approx. Rs. 740). And then there are games such as Rayman Origins, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend, F1 2011, EA Sports FIFA Soccer, Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour Edition and Dungeon Hunter: Alliance that are priced anywhere between 30 USD (approx. Rs. 1,480) to 40 USD (approx. Rs. 1,975). But the exception among the lot definitely is Uncharted: Golden Abyss, which sells for a hefty 44.99 USD (approx. Rs. 2,470).

For PS3 gamers, The House Of The Dead III as well as Worms Ultimate Mayhem have been released with this week’s PS Store update, and are available for purchase at 6.99 USD (approx. Rs. 345) and 14.99 USD (approx. Rs. 740), respectively. Moreover, Grand Theft Auto IV too makes it to PSN as a PS3 Full Game, and retails at 19.99 USD (approx. Rs. 990). For PS Plus members, a full game trial for this title is also available, along with a discount on its original price. As part of a V-Day Special One Week Offer, PS Plus subscribers can download Far Cry 2 for free. Other titles like Battle Fantasia, Fatal Inertia, Inferno Pool and more can also be acquired by them at no cost.

Along with Mass Effect 3, Binary Domain also gets a demo this week, with both of them being downloadable now for the PS3. Scheduled DLCs for Soulcalibur V and UFC Undisputed 3 also make their way into the Store, along with add-ons for other games such as Zen Pinball, TNT Racers, Saints Row: The Third, Ace Combat Assault Horizon and more. Furthermore, there’s something for PSP users as well. Hakuoki: Demon of The Fleeting Blossom is now available on PSN for the handheld at a price of 24.99 USD (approx. Rs. 1,235).

That was the PS Store update for this week. While this one had quite a number of new PS Vita games crammed into it, we’re sure that the one from next week will have more such titles as February 22 will mark the official release date of the handheld.

I sense I'll just reinvent the wheel when it matches game. It's so cool. Though there are varieties of sites that offer innumerable of games on a trial basis where you have to purchase the games later, you can still find a host of other sites that lets you play the games for free trials before you like the game and make a mind to buy the original version. Computer PC games offer things that regular consoles can't offer, such as better graphics, more flexibility in creativity, modifying "bugs" in the system, interactive play with other people, daily game improvements, and cheaper costs of playing. #5 1701 AD Another oldie, but definitely a goodie, 1701 AD is one of my favorite "God Games" ever.

FIFA: Is this Vita’s killer app?

1329740653 93 FIFA: Is this Vitas killer app?

FIFA Football can be PlayStation Vita’s big system shifter. And that’s not a statement from publisher EA, but a leading video games developer.

Epic Games VP Mark Rein reckons consumers will lap up the title. His comments come after FIFA 12 topped the Chart-Track All Formats Top 40 for seven weeks. FIFA remains a PSP top seller, too.

“You generally don’t find a killer app at the launch of a new console,” Rein told MCV. “But I’m really looking forward to playing FIFA. To me that’s why I buy a portable system.

“With the dual analog sticks and rear touch screen, I think FIFA could be the killer app for PS Vita.”

FIFA Football’s producer Matt Prior added: “FIFA pushes the PS3 to its limits. We’ve brought that experience to a handheld and I think footy fans will appreciate this. Hopefully it’s a big success.

“We can look to integrate the Vita experience with the console. Some potential uses in the future would be being able to continue your career mode or Ultimate Team on the go, then upload your progress at home and continue it on your console. ‘FIFA anywhere’ would be a great experience.”

This PC game is great for students of almost any age. What would they rather have? In the game players cannot sprint in game play. Though these games are free, a couple of the 3D versions give you a demo to play hoping that you will buy the full version. It isn't unexpected for this question to lose its luster. Much of the player aircraft instrumentation is functional with true and indicated airspeeds, altimeters, bank and slipstream indicators, artificial horizons, fuel and ordinance readouts, flaps and gear indicators, clocks, compasses, climb indicators, and tail-hook and autopilot beacons. The only bad thing I can say about the main campaign is the size of the areas you fight in, as if you have played the original Crysis then you will know that the maps are a lot larger and have more of a sandbox feel to them. Through what agency do involved parties encounter tiptop helicopter game classes? This is a well defined conclusion for borrowing that with kids games. The Rubberbandits… on your mobile phone? Yep, believe it or not, Limerick’s finest will be coming to iOS and Android handsets later this year.

The app, titled ‘The Revenge of Stephen Forward’ is developed by Open Emotion a Limerick-based studio best known for their PSP Mini downloads, including the likes of Mad Blocker Alpha and Ninjamurai. We caught up with the team a few months back although they were tight-lipped on upcoming projects at the time.

For the official word on the upcoming title, we’ll leave it to Open Emotion: “RubberBandits: The Revenge of Stephen Forward is an iOS, Android game based on Limericks most succesful Hip Hop group.

Awhile back I noticed a game like that. If you already have a copy of the original Crysis then I would definitely recommend that you buy Crysis 2 as it fills in the gaps of the first game. I have a preorder for a PSV:Wi-Fi, and plan to get a few PSN games for it… my huge question is: Is the development teams in charge of the Vita updates looking into adding compatibility for arcade-type PSN games such as Castle Crashers, X-Men, Simpsons, TMNT: Reshelled, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter HD, etc into a future Vita update?

These games would be FANTASTIC ports over to the vita, and shouldn’t be hard to quickly convert, since most are in HD already, and use 6 buttons at the most… With the huge library people have built up over the years of simple arcade games on the PS3, it’d be a huge payoff to allow these games to travel.

Final comment/question: Any other games besides Ultimate MvC3 slated to use the PSV/PS3 ultimate controller link up? I think it’s an awesome concept, and would love to see it used in many different genres. Imagine in a COD-type game assigning med packs & aerial assaults to the touch screen. Imagine a football game where you select plays on the touch screen, including hand-written plays, or an MMORPG where the touch screen housed the map/inventory screens so as to not clutter the main image with the UI.

Vita has so much potential!

The most significant of these is to always game what you know. Much of the depth and nuance is gone thanks to this direction change. Definitely no sound. Davion is a game fanatic. The member formerly known as m268139231223b, or something like that. Now he’s a pseudo-revolutionary that lurks on twitter. Say hello to HoboCastro.

Fascinated by what people have commented on the most this week.

Right, well we’ll start in the usual place. Who are you, how old are you and where do you come from?

Mark Livesey, 31 years old and I’m from the beautiful City of Chester.

Chester… Chester… That sounds familiar… Nope, can’t remember. Ah well. Where does your rather revolutionary username come from?

My user name, HoboCastro came from my appearance and my political allegiances. I went with Castro because Stalin was a bit of a nob.

Well, it could have been Trotsky? Then again, he had the ol’ pickaxe to the head treatment… Maybe Lenin instead?

Could have, but Cuba sounds a nicer place to holiday than Soviet Russia.

Rum vs. Vodka, really, isn’t it?

Oops. I drink Vodka, so I should change that.

I guess the Cubans might let you off the hook. Didn’t you previously go by something like m3813b?

Yep, m61726b is my TSA account name and my PSN, HoboCastro is my user name. A quick explanation, 6d:61:72:6b are the HEX values of my name, mark. PSN IDs have to start with a letter, thus 6d became ‘m’. Nerd-overload!

Total nerd-gasm! Please do tell us, how did you first get into gaming?

I started with the Commodore 64 and moved between PC and console gaming up until my missus bought me a PS3! In that time I’ve played pretty much every system.

Awesome. So, you’ve been through all the Nintendo and Sega consoles, PS1, etc. etc.? Do you have a particular favourite system and manufacturer?

My favourite system because of how much I got out of it was the original Xbox. My favourite for games was either PS1 of N64. Both had great exclusive games.

What was it in particular about the Xbox? The dawn of a real online gaming infrastructure? Halo 2?

I never played online with it. I used PC’s for that playing Quake and Battlefield 2. I got so much from it because of its media capabilities, playing DVDs and ripping music.

I get you now. Yes, the HDD built in, and the XBMC software modding that spawned from it were pretty comprehensive. Some people still have the Xbox in their media hubs.

Though in terms of games, it’s the generation before, the PS1 and N64. So what’s your favourite game of all time?

Easy. Gran Turismo 2. My brother and I spent hours on it. Tweaking setups, doing endurance and getting every gold in licenses. Mario 64 is a close second.

I’m sure plenty would agree with you on that. Are you still a fan with Gran Turismo 5?

Very much so but as with many I was a bit disappointed on release. I think the racing sim has changed throughout gaming with other games coming out. GT5 seemed to be a sim for the sake of realism. Other games like NFS Shift had incorporated a more arcade feel and change sims to being more fun than serious.

That’s part of why lots of people have a place for Forza in their gaming collections now. Do you have a 360 to play that with?

Yes. As a family gift for Christmas we got a 360 with Kinect. Although I’m yet to play any exclusives, other than the Kinect games.

Haha, well I’m sure that you should give it a go. Is there much fun to be had with the Kinect, in your opinion?

Definitely. I can’t dance so trying to is hilarious. Also, downloadable games like Fruit Ninja and Hole in the Wall are brilliant. I think it was brave of Microsoft to ditch hand-operated controls and I’m happy they did and it has succeeded.

Good good. One of my favourite questions each week is asking what the worst or most embarrassing game you’ve ever played is? Maybe even a guilty pleasure you have?

If I think a game is bad after the first chapter, I’ll give up on it so it hard to chose one. I did play Leisure Suit Larry on PC in the old days. It was funny but quite terrible too.

Hehe. I actually kind of want to play that game one day. What games are you most looking forward to in the coming year? Are there plans with regards to the Vita?

Sniper Elite 2, I’m really looking forward to that sense of relief when the bullet can kicks in and I know I’ve made the shot.

I’m not getting a Vita and not just because of the costs. I can’t see any games on it I couldn’t miss out on playing. I bought an import PSP on release in the hope of playing GTPSP on it and it took years, in the end I only played LBPSP. I could see that being the same with Vita.

So a kind of wait and see deal? That’s fair enough. I know many people are planning to wait for at least a full model revision to a slimmer thing…

To buy a game, that is one place that you know you can depend on (In less than a hour, I had more games than I had in years). Most Star Wars games have different playing fields; depending on the each stage. It is true that anyone can learn to drive a car, but it takes very specialized training to become a commercial airline pilot. It is better to ensure that the information you put in at the time of registration is accurate so that you can receive their newsletters informing you about the latest games launched, gaming competitions and various other activities. Game is the best element since sliced bread.
