The birth of the DQ Castle

diasFlec's DQ Castle began in 1999 and was designed at a time when Dragon Quest was no longer being released in North America although it was continuing to grow in Japan. Information on the subject was limited to only a handful of English websites, including the DQ Castle and a small band of confederates dedicated to spreading the word od Dragon Quest.

In 2009, the DQ Castle celebrated 10 years on online ‘Quest-iness’.

When I finally did get home (Quebec), I immediately popped DW III in my NES and officially fell in love with DW forever. Finally, when DW IV came out, my mom ordered it for Christmas from a catalogue and we waited and waited, delay after delay which led me to believe I would never get it! I stared at the catalogue almost daily, waiting for it to arrive (it pictured 2 images from DW IV: Ragnar at Burland Castle, which looked almost 3D, and a battle scene, with a Diverat and some Slimes if I remember right). Eventually it arrived and became my favorite DW game of all time!

Sadly, this was the last North American DQ game I would get, that anyone would get, for a long, long time, and it was during this wait that the DQ Castle was born.

My interest in Dragon Quest began with Dragon Warrior on the NES, a random game I picked up (or rather, my mom did…). Although I wasn’t very good at it (No jumping or shooting?), I learned (with help from my cousin) and eventually beat the Dragon Lord. A few years go by and I spot DW II at the local video store, I could never find it for sale and so I would rent and re-rent the game over and over. In fact DW II was the last Dragon Warrior game I had bought (during the original NES run), quite some time after DW IV. More years go by… On a trip to Ontario (visiting my grandparents for my birthday) I bought Dragon Warrior III (the first game I bought with my own money). My grandparents didn’t have a NES and so all I could do was memorize the maps, charts and explorer’s guide while I was there.
