Nintendo Chief Tips NFC, New Network for Wii U

Nintendo’s Wii successor, the Wii U, will come equipped with near-field communication (NFC) technology, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said Friday in a presentation to investors.

“By installing this functionality, it will become possible to create cards and figurines that can electronically read and write data via noncontact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world,” he said. “Adoption of this functionality will enable various other possibilities such as using it as a means of making micropayments.”

The NFC implementation Nintendo plans to use will be the FeliCa and MIFARE standards, Iwata said.

He also tipped the Nintendo Network, a platform that will offer downloadable content like digital add-ons and game packages for the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. It will allow gamers to communicate, compete, and form communities around specific games.

Additionally, Iwata acknowledged the struggle the company has had with the 3DS, the glassesless 3D handheld Nintendo launched in March, and discussed how slow sales of the device prevented the company from reaching financial goals this fiscal year.

In the quarterly report Nintendo gave yesterday, it posted a loss for the first three quarters of fiscal 2011 and forecasted an even bigger loss for the entire 12-month period, which closes in March. Nintendo expects to lose as much as $838 million for the year, a hit it will take due to dismal sales of the 3DS. It also lowered its outlook for 3DS sales for the year from 16 million units to 14 million.

Iwata said that sales of the 3DS have picked up worldwide since November, due to the launch of “strong titles,” meaning Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, the first 3Ds titles featuring Mario.

However, when Nintendo launches the Wii U at the end of the year, Iwata said the company will not forget the disappointment it has had with the 3DS. “We are going to put to use our bitter experience with the 3DS,” he said.
