Well, it now appears that Nintendo has just been quiet on the subject and has been hard at work on the new console.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the company is on target to achieve that release goal. The Wii U will be available to gamers in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan in time for the 2012 Christmas buying season.
